Today's scholars find such an idea anathema, because it would mean that the Jews have a historic tie to the land, and too many modern academics want to separate Zionism from Judaism. But at the time, it was obvious to all, Jew and non-Jew. Wolf was an anti-Zionist himself. He lobbied against the Balfour Declaration and co-founded the anti-Zionist League of British Jews. His political opinion caused his blind spot, both in this article and his article on antisemitism in the encyclopedia, where he fervently believed that Jew-hatred was a thing of the past and the world was more enlightened - dooming Zionism to failure. His predictions were fatally wrong. Yet even as the antisemitism that he confidently believed had been receding was proven to be not only resilient but far deadlier than anyone could imagine, he didn't have the honesty to admit his mistakes. However, by focusing solely on Israel's actions as the determining factor regarding the future of the two-state solution, the New York Times is effectively removing any responsibility from the Palestinian Authority. Indeed, aside from a passing remark about Palestinian corruption dimming the hopes of a Palestinian state, this opinion piece makes no mention of the Palestinian Authority's financial support for terrorists and their families, its twice rebuffing American attempts at peace negotiations over the past 10 years or its continued incitement against Israelis and Jews within its official media organs and schools. The only mention of the word "terror" in the editorial is in reference to past convictions by incoming National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. All of these factors, which directly imperil the chance for a successful two-state solution, existed long before the incoming Israeli government was ever formed. Here's a story from December 14 that was not at all unusual, of Jewish civilians being targeted and killed by Arabs. Here is a massacre of Jews who were bringing food to a Jewish children's village from the December 15 edition. This slaughter is barely mentioned nowadays. A follow-up story notes that five of the dead were under 18 years old. On December 16, we see that Arabs were happily embracing the "spirit of Hitler" in their genocidal aims: Jews didn't only have to be concerned about attacks by Arabs. Here is a horrific story of a Jewish girl raped by British soldiers. The only way to demand justice from a rape by British soldiers was to go to...British police. Later in the month, an attempt to hear the case was stymied when the male witness could not be found. That is the last I could see about this story.
